Meet John Henry

John Henry, the legendary "steel driving man" was a railroad worker during the 1870s. The story has it that John Henry, a former slave, worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad helping to build the Great Bend Tunnel. The tunnel went through the Big Bend Mountains and took a thousand men and boys three years to finish. John Henry could do the work of ten men, so it was said!

Meet the legendary John Henry as he draws you back to the days when he was well known throughout Virginia. Hear stories of his youth and why he married Miss Polly Ann, the prettiest and sweetest woman there ever was. Come go back into history; learn about the time period and geography as it relates to the C&O Railroad. Enjoy audience participation; Learn call´n response poetry, learn what a shaker is, and how to hammer in rhythm with your team. Did John Henry die with a hammer in his hand like they say? Well, .... ask him! The Q&A session at the presentation´s end will address specific questions.

An entertaining and educational presentation. The program is family-friendly and participatory; sure to be enjoyed by all.
